She Sees in Herself a New Woman Every Day
1976

Installation with twelve color photographs, Plexiglas, tape recorder, and audio (17:12 minutes)

Twelve color photographs of a woman’s feet in various shoes are arranged in a grid on the floor and accompanied by an audio recording that narrates an imaginary conversation between a woman and her mother. The photographs are taken from the perspective of the subject and visitor, looking down at her own feet. This detached view suggests that each pair of shoes represents a different persona or a new version of the self. Rosler questions what it means to “stand on your own two feet” as a woman, and the associated pressure to conform.
