Air Fare

This series documents the many meals Rosler has been served on flights to and from installations, exhibitions, and projects. The differences between meals served in first-class and economy seats are instantly visible, from an artfully composed salmon mousse to an abject pizza. A meal seen on an airplane's video screen seems as real (or fake) as those on the open tray tables. The workers who cook, wrap, label, and deliver these culinary delights are invisible and anonymous. The servers, the cabin crew, and the served are neatly slotted into their roles. The artist's deadpan humor is in full operation: the politics of food, one of her abiding interests, is here distilled into a sequence of colorful, atmospherically lit, miniature essays on cultural norms and economic inequality—and a near-perpetual failure to replicate a decent meal.
